Lost village? ✅
Scenic stroll? ✅
Secluded natural bay? ✅

This day trip truly has it all! Start your walk at the lost village of Tyneham in Lulworth and walk 25 minutes down a gravel track to access this stunning, sheltered bay.

Tyneham Village and Worbarrow Bay are owned by the Ministry of Defence, so access is restricted to specific times. They are generally open on the weekends and during public holidays, but make sure to check before you travel.

The village where time stood still...

Tyneham village was evacuated in 1943 during World War II and has been under MOD ownership ever since.

The villagers were made to leave their homes as the MOD needed the village for military training (Lulworth and Bovington camps are very close), but after the war ended the villagers were not allowed to return.

The village remains part of the Armoured Fighting Vehicles Gunnary School, which is a training arm of the British Army.

The terrace of four cottages ‘The Row” have been left as they are (in pieces!) but the church and the village school have been restored with exhibits and show a snapshot in time of life in 1943.

There are toilets here and also The Forgotten Salt Pig trailer cafe. Make sure you stop for a coffee and some cake!

Worbarrow Bay

Follow the signs through Tyneham village to access the footpath down to Worbarrow Bay. The walk is about 25 minutes and is fairly flat and gravelly until the very last part. Generally, the beach access is very good and much more easily accessed than, say, Durdle Door or Church Ope Cove.

Dogs are allowed on this beach and it is perfect for swimming!
